Magic Mushrooms - intoxicating Mountains

"Magic Mushroom" is a fascinating and creative composition of the most diverse types of mountaineering, presented from the perspective of an extraordinary alpinist. While others increasingly tend to specialise in one aspect of mountain sports, Christoph Hainz might be one of the last true all-rounders who have made their dream of living the mountaineering culture come true.

Christoph Hainz starts his talk presenting his birthplace, a 200-year-old farm and museum piece in the South Tyrolean Mühlwald valley.

After a late introduction to the local mountaineering and climbing scene, he started climbing in the nearby Dolomites, where he achieved around 30 difficult first-time ascents over the years.

After his first big excursion abroad in 1993 during which he climbed the Shivling (Garhwal Himalaya) together with Hans Kammerlander, he ascended the Fitz Roy (Patagonia) alone in a record time of 9 hours. He has also brought back some fascinating pictures of his first big-wall experience on the granite rock of El Capitán together with his wife.

After each of his many climbing trips between Australia and Cape Town, Christoph Hainz is always happy to return to his home town in South Tyrol, which he considers an oasis of tranquility and small paradise. Another topic of his talk are his efforts to successfully combine his activities as a mountain guide and extreme athlete with his family life - a real challenge for himself, his wife and two children.

Christoph Hainz also reveals new routes in far-off countries: from exotic landscapes in the Moroccan Taghia Gorge to all the way Greenland. Stunning climbing photos take the audience into a world of flawless rock walls, and impressive ascents as well as vertiginous descents on skis and snowboards in the South Tyrolean mountains make the viewer crave for snow.

Christoph Hainz finishes off with a talk about the Eiger North Face, which has always challenged and fascinated him in many different ways: as a mountain guide on the classic Heckmair route (every section of which is legendary), on his solo-ascent of that route in only 4.5 hours (to the entry with the first cog train and back down into the valley with the last one) or on his 2007 first-time ascent in the fall line of the Mushroom - which gives the presentation its title.
