The limits imposed by the horizontal roofs of the Three Peaks, the Montblanc high end, free solo on 4000 metres, highlines on high-Alpine glaciers, speed climbing on the Yosemite big walls and several first-time ascents in Patagonia – Alexander Huber's talk proves that mountaineering has never before been as thriving as it is today.
Over the years, alpinism has changed our perception of the mountains. If in past times they were considered hostile and ominous, mountaineering has managed to put the steep worlds of rocks and massifs into quite a different perspective. During his talk, Alexander Huber presents current highlights from this intriguing and multisided world: His amazing pictures combined with fascinating film sequences and outstanding music make for a truly unique experience.
The golden era of mountaineering began with the first-time ascent of the Montblanc in 1786. While at first the summits were the passionate mountaineers' main objective, difficult ridges and walls soon took their place. Progressing at an increasingly faster pace, mountaineering was suddenly declared at an end when, with all of the eight-thousanders, even the world's highest peaks had been conquered.
But mountaineering lives on! Although in the 1980s it was widely believed that there was nothing essentially new to discover in mountain sports, it seems that there's no limit to the creativity of today's mountaineers. A continuous flow of innovative ideas on ice and rocks and in extreme heights keeps on fascinating mountain fans world-wide.
