1) Pit Schubert: Safety on the Mountain and in Climbing Halls

Pit Schubert is one of the first Germans to have climbed all three north faces of the Alps. With a background in aerospace engineering, he has become famous as a climber, mountaineer and author of many specialised books. On 4 November, the renowned extreme mountaineer and founder of the German Alpine Club Safety Committee will talk about safety and the risks both on the mountain and in climbing halls.

The following issues will be treated:

• How much do our ropes endure? Generally much more than we think, but the alarming news is: often only very little!
• Climbing: with or without a helmet? What does the Chief Prosecutor think of it?
• Figure eights, carabiners and hairline cracks - can they break?
• Exotic climbing accidents - Nothing is impossible.
• Everything can happen, even in indoor climbing - especially accidents due to blackouts.
• How safe are vie ferrate? What can happen?
• To conclude and to lighten up the atmosphere: a series of photos of the Himalayas explaining the risks of altitude sickness and frostbite.
• The discussion round following the talk will give the audience a chance to ask the speakers topic-related questions.

2) Elio Guastalli: Alpine Safety - the Human Factor

Elio Guastalli teaches at the Istituto Tecnico Industriale "G. Cardano" in Pavia (Italy) and holds important functions at the Italian Alpine Club (Club Alpino Italiano/CAI) as well as at the Italian mountain rescue and speleology body (Corpo Nazionale Soccorso Alpino e Speleologico/CNSAS). On 4 November, the experienced mountaineer will talk about safety and human behaviour in the mountains.
